Rootbeer has many awesome qualities. However, one of his most awesome qualities is the ability to talk with anyone, anywhere, at anytime. He is extreemly social, friendly, outgoing, and inquisitive. I just love the way he can walk up to complete strangers and ask them just about anything. Now that is a great skill to have. </div>
<div style="color: #38761d;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #38761d;">The picture shows how, while we were on our co-op field trip, he saw a lady painting and proceeded to converse with her about her painting. She was eager to answer any question that he had. Proudly fulfilling his inquisitive mind. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6259449790489111884.post-53789904593925859522012-05-09T10:00:00.000-07:002012-05-11T16:36:20.233-07:00Homeschool Co-Op/Japanese Garden Day Stroll @ The Botanical Gardens<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<h3>
How You Can Explore the Day: </h3>
</center> <br />
<ol>
<li><b>Science:</b> <br />
Begin your butterfly exploration with the <a href="http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/butterflies/game/game.htm">Florida Museum of Natural History’s Butterfly Discovery Game</a>. You’ll find some basic facts and then your kids can use the free online interactive to create their own butterfly. The neat part about this learning tool is that after they get to mix and match body shape, wing shape and color pattern, they’ll see how it matches up to one of 20,000 real butterfly species.<br />
</li>
<li><b>Science:</b> <br />
Migration or hibernation? The <a href="http://www.monarchlab.org/Lab/Research/Topics/Migration/Default.aspx">University of Minnesota’s MonarchLab</a><a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6259449790489111884"> offers some of the most kid-friendly explanations about butterfly migration. As you read about the butterfly’s sun compass behavior, get your own magnetic compass out for a bit of orienteering with your kids.<br />
</a><a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6259449790489111884">Of course, not all butterflies leave their habitat for the winter. Most of them hibernate, much like a bear. The </a><a href="http://www.naturemuseum.org/online/thebutterflylab/behavior/overwintering.html">Butterfly Lab</a> is not that kid-friendly of a site but it will help you learn some basic facts about hibernation behaviors and butterflies. </li>
<li><b>Geography:</b> <br />
Monarchs are known for their migratory flights from Canada to Mexico. Grab a map and identify these countries. Better yet, visit the <a href="http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/monarch/indexCurrent.html">Monarch Migration website</a> and use their historic data to track migratory patterns. Poke around the site because they have excellent images, activity ideas, and science journaling prompts to help your budding naturalist think like a scientist.<br />
</li>
<li><b>Science and Latin:</b> <br />
Butterflies belong to the scientific order Lepidoptera. Help your kids be a word sleuth and break down what it means. Hint: It’s two words, lepido and ptera. <br />
Start with this <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latin_and_Greek_words_commonly_used_in_systematic_names">Wikipedia chart of Latin and Greek root words</a> commonly used in scientific names. Brainstorm other animals that may have scales and wings. Do they share the same Latin root words? (Think about certain dinosaurs and snakes.) Print out pictures of different animals and organize them in ways that show how they are similar and how they are different. </li>

I suppose
it is just the simplicity of it all that I love the best, boys
and their sticks!! I tried for many years to NOT let him play with
sticks. The whole, you'll poke your eye out concept. But by and by, that
is the only thing that he was truly interested in, while playing
outside! He twirls, jumps, flies through the air, marches, and so on.
Just he and his stick! I don't know if it's just a mom thing, but oh how
I love to just simply sit and watch, my boy with his stick. I just
happily gaze out the window to see what he will do next, with that stick
and incredible imagination of his.<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhskTEQC6xSFVIVDfigTBU_AZKuLUQ_OphcO3a1exc-ho1EeuGvvUkPx1JbuZmnm5PLOjKFEvmyf-ZLRpFLUeuCiq4JWt0ivd4mpmB2WKKqhkbUiVrbk-lJH2JKzxsAW51Lyv-SOPsalFY/s320/blogger-image-476680085.jpg" width="240" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
What Is Colorblindness and the Different Types?
</div>
<div style="margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.testingcolorvision.com/">
<img border="0" height="232" src="http://colorvisiontesting.com/TCV-LOGO-&-insert-10-09-11-logo-only.gif" width="255" /></a></div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="color: red;">T</span><span style="font-size: medium;">he human eye sees by
light stimulating the retina (a neuro-membrane lining
the inside back of the eye). The retina is made up of what are called
Rods and
Cones. The rods, located in the peripheral retina, give us our night
vision, but
can not distinguish color. Cones, located in the center of the retina
(called
the macula), are not much good at night but do let us perceive color
during
daylight conditions.</span></div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"> <br />
The cones, each contain a light sensitive pigment which is sensitive
over a
range of wavelengths (each visible color is a different wavelength from
approximately 400 to 700 nm). Genes contain the coding instructions for
these
pigments, and if the coding instructions are wrong, then the wrong
pigments will
be produced, and the cones will be sensitive to different wavelengths of
light
(resulting in a color deficiency). The colors that we see are completely
dependent on the sensitivity ranges of those pigments. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
Many people think anyone labeled as "colorblind" only sees black and
white -
like watching a black and white movie or television. This is a big
misconception
and not true. It is extremely rare to be totally color blind
(monochromasy -
complete absence of any color sensation). There are many different types
and
degrees of colorblindness - more correctly called color vision
deficiencies.</span></div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
People with normal cones and light sensitive pigment (trichromasy) are
able to
see all the different colors and subtle mixtures of them by<img align="right" border="0" height="193" src="http://colorvisiontesting.com/normalcolor72gif.gif" width="216" /> using cones
sensitive to one of three wavelength of light - red, green, and blue. A
mild
color deficiency is present when one or more of the three cones light
sensitive
pigments are not quite right and their peak sensitivity is shifted
(anomalous trichromasy - includes protanomaly and deuteranomaly). A
more severe color
deficiency is present when one or more of the cones light sensitive
pigments is
really wrong (dichromasy - includes protanopia and deuteranopia). </span>
</div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
5% to 8% (depending on the study you quote) of the men and 0.5% of the
women of
the world are born colorblind. That's as high as one out of twelve men
and one
out of two hundred women. I am going to limit this discussion to protans
(red
weak) and deutans (green weak) because they make up 99% of this group. </span>
</div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
<b>Protanomaly (one out of 100 males): <br />
</b>Protanomaly is referred to as "red-weakness", an apt description of
this
form of color deficiency. Any redness seen in a color by a normal
observer is
seen more weakly by the protanomalous viewer, both in terms of its
"coloring
power" (saturation, or depth of color) and its brightness. Red, orange,
yellow,
and
yellow-green appear somewhat shifted in hue (<i>"hue" is just
another word for "color"</i>) towards green, and all appear paler than
they do
to the normal observer. The redness component that a normal observer
sees in a
violet or lavender color is so weakened for the protanomalous observer
that he
may fail to detect it, and therefore sees only the blue component.
Hence, to him
the color that normals call "violet" may look only like another shade of
blue.
</span>

Color Deficient Dichromat</span></b></div>
<div align="center" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://colorvisiontesting.com/grapes%20normal.jpg" width="216" /><img border="0" height="320" src="http://colorvisiontesting.com/grapes%20color%20deficient.jpg" width="217" /></span></div>
<div align="center" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<b><i>
<span style="font-size: medium;">(source: critiquewall.com by Paul Martin)</span></i></b></div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">
<b><br />
</b>Under poor viewing conditions, such as when driving in dazzling
sunlight or in
rainy or foggy weather, it is easily possible for protanomalous
individuals to
mistake a blinking red traffic light from a blinking yellow or amber
one, or to
fail to distinguish a green traffic light from the various "white"
lights in
store fronts, signs, and street lights that line our streets. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
<b style="background-color: #38761d; color: black;">Deuteranomaly (five out of 100 males): <br />
</b><span style="background-color: #38761d; color: black;">The deuteranomalous person is considered "green weak". Similar to
the
protanomalous person, he is poor at discriminating small differences in
hues in
the red, orange, yellow, green region of the spectrum. He makes errors
in the
naming of hues in this region because they appear somewhat shifted
towards red
for him. One very important difference between deuteranomalous
individuals and
protanomalous individuals is deuteranomalous individuals do "not" have
the loss
of "brightness" problem. </span></span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="background-color: #38761d; color: black; margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
From a practical stand point, many protanomalous and deuteranomalous
people breeze through life with very little difficulty doing tasks that
require
normal color vision. Some may not even be aware that their color
perception is
in any way different from normal nor do their friends. The only problem
they have is passing that
"Blank Blank" color vision test. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
<b>Dichromasy - can be divided into protanopia and deuteranopia</b> (two
out of
100 males): <br />
These individuals normally know they have a color vision problem and it
can
effect their lives on a daily basis. They see no perceptible difference
between
red, orange, yellow, and green. All these colors that seem so different
to the
normal viewer appear to be the same color for this two percent of the
population.
<img align="right" border="0" height="192" src="http://colorvisiontesting.com/protanope72gif.gif" width="216" /></span></div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
<b>Protanopia (one out of 100 males): <br />
</b>For the protanope, the brightness of red, orange, and yellow is much
reduced
compared to normal. This dimming can be so pronounced that reds may be
confused
with black or dark gray, and red traffic lights may appear to be
extinguished.
They may learn to distinguish reds from yellows and from greens
primarily on the
basis of their apparent brightness or lightness, not on any perceptible
hue
difference. Violet, lavender, and purple are indistinguishable from
various
shades of blue because their reddish components are so dimmed as to be
invisible. E.g. Pink flowers, reflecting both red light and blue light,
may
appear just blue to the protanope. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">
<img align="right" border="0" height="194" src="http://colorvisiontesting.com/deuteranope72gif.gif" width="216" /><br />
<b>Deuteranopia (one out of 100 males): </b><br />
The deuteranope suffers the same hue discrimination problems as the
protanope,
but without the abnormal dimming. The names red, orange, yellow, and
green
really mean very little to him aside from being different names that
every one
else around him seems to be able to agree on. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 80px;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">
<br />
<b>In Conclusion: <br />
</b>It should be obvious there are several different kinds and degrees
of color
vision deficiencies. Protanomalous or deuteranomalous individuals can
usually
pass as a normal observer in everyday activities. They may make
occasional
errors in color names, or may encounter difficulties in discriminating
small
differences in colors, but usually they do not perform very differently
from the
normal except on color vision tests. <br />
The protanope and deuteranope, on the other hand, can be severely color
deficient. The real problem, as a protanope or deuteranope may see it,
is there
are far too many hue names (color names) used by most people without any
obvious
basis for using one instead of another. Why call something "orange" when
it
doesn't look different in any way from something else called green, tan,
beige,
or any of several other color names? </span> </div>

<span style="color: red; font-family: Arial; font-size: x-large;">T</span><span style="font-size: large;">oday,
having normal color vision or being colorblind, plays a big part in our
educational system. We not only have to learn our colors but
color-enhanced
instructional materials have become common place throughout the
classroom. To see a sample
of color-enhanced instructional material

understand
the special needs of color deficient children and what can be done to
help them
in their quest to learn. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 100px;">
<span style="font-size: large;">
For some color deficient individuals, the names red, orange, yellow, and
green
are simply different names for the same color. The same is true for
violet,
lavender, purple, and blue. Among the colors most often confused are
pink/gray,
orange/red, white/green, green/brown, blue green/gray, green/yellow,
brown/maroon, and beige/green. Pastels and muted tones are difficult to
distinguish. The color vision defect may be so bad that the affected
person
cannot distinguish brown socks from green socks, a red traffic light
from an amber
one, or green grass from brown soil by color alone. </span> </div>

item say to draw a line to the red ball. The other ball is brown. Both
colors

<b>2. </b> A teacher is writing vocabulary words on a green chalk board

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>b. </b>
Label coloring utensils (crayons, colored pencils, and pens) with the

<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 100px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>c. </b>Use white chalk, not colored chalk, on the board to
maximize contrast. Avoid yellow, orange, or light tan chalk on green
chalkboards. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 100px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>d.</b> Xerox parts of textbooks or any instructional
materials
printed with colored ink. Black print on red or green paper is not
safe. It may appear as black on black to some color deficient
students.
</span>
</div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 100px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>e.</b> Assign a classmate to help color deficient
students
when assignments require color recognition. Example - color coding
different countries on a world map. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 100px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>f. </b> Teach color deficient students the color of common
objects. Knowing what color things are can help them in their daily
tasks. Example: when asked to color a picture, they will know to use
the
crayon "labeled" green for the grass, blue for the sky, and light tan
for Lincoln's face. </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 100px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>g.</b> Try teaching children "all" the colors. Remember,
most
color deficient children can identify pure primary colors. It is
normally just different shades or tints that give them problems. If
they
can not learn certain colors, let them know you understand some colors
look the same to them and it is "OK". </span> </div>
<div align="justify" style="margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 100px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>h.</b> Make sure a child's color vision has been tested

they have to learn their colors or color-enhanced instructional
materials are used.</span></div>

Butterfly bombs are
little balls made of soil, clay and wildflower seeds. You toss the bombs
wherever you want a butterfly garden to grow. Rain will melt the clay
and wash the seeds into the ground. In a few months, you’ll have an
explosion of wildflowers perfect for any butterflies that flutter by.<br />
<h3>
Round Up These Ingredients</h3>
<ul>
<li>Powdered clay (available at most craft stores)</li>
<li>Potting soil</li>
<li>Wildflower seeds (Make sure to choose wildflowers that are native to
Missouri. The <a class="ext" href="http://grownative.org/" target="_self" title="Grow Native!">Grow Native! website</a><span class="ext"></span> can give you ideas for which seeds to use.)</li>
<li>Water</li>
</ul>
<h3>
Get Your Hands Dirty</h3>
<ol>
<li>In a mixing bowl, combine 5 parts powdered clay, 5 parts potting
soil and 1 part wildflower seeds.</li>
<li>Add a tiny bit of water. You'll need just enough to make a thick,
clay-like dough. Don't add too much at first; you can always add more
water later.</li>
<li>Use your hands to roll the mixture into balls the size of large gum
balls.</li>
<li>Put your butterfly bombs on an old newspaper and let them harden in a
cool, dry place for at least three days.</li>
<li>Toss your butterfly bombs wherever you want flowers to grow. (Make
sure it's okay with an adult first!)</li>
</ol>

<br />
In this digital, on-line age, I think some very important things have been left by the wayside. We forget the importance of the written word, and how invaluable it has been, and still should be. In instilling these believes we began searching for a reason to write! <br />
<br />
Luckily, through our unit curriculum program, and Facebook forum, we have found a pen-pal for RootBeer...Yeah!!<br />
<br />
The only things we know so far are that he is the same age, and lives in a different state 1,260 miles away!<br />
<br />
Today we are going to get back to basics by purchase stamps, envelops, and writing paper to get started!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6259449790489111884.post-4523199608241730172012-02-02T20:41:00.000-08:002012-02-04T09:06:11.617-08:00Life-Organization Ideas for Small SpacesHomeschool Curriculum Storage<br />
